Created in 2003, the Prime Time Games® is TPT’s fully inclusive alternative “varsity” sport model that gives two underserved populations from the same school, neurotypical youth from lower-income communities (“Peer Coaches”) and the students with disabilities (“Athletes”) they mentor, the chance to compete together in the only league of its kind.
What makes the program so unique is that it takes a population often perceived as needing mentors, students from lower-income communities, and instead gives them the evidence-based training necessary to become the mentors for an additional underserved group, creating lasting benefits for both.
Each academic year runs three 10-week seasons: Fall Soccer, Winter Flag Football, and Spring Basketball. Each season culminates in Championship Saturday. UCLA hosts Spring Basketball, LMU hosts Fall Soccer, and AV Alta FC hosts soccer and flag football for the Antelope Valley and San Bernardino schools.
While the Prime Time Games® began as, and remains, the centerpiece of TPT’s leadership curriculum, it has also become a standalone program implemented by our partner CBOs and school districts nationwide, because it is a single program that delivers a proven, turnkey way to satisfy two priority education initiatives, Inclusion/Access and Social Emotional Learning, for their two most underserved populations.
To date, over 100 schools nationwide have participated in the program through established leagues and programs across the country.Atonye@teamprimetime.or
