| | | | | ACADEMICS There are four goals of the academic component of the TPT after-school program. The first goal is to assist the students in the completion of their homework and make sure they are performing well in their classes. The second goal is to identify and address each student’s demonstrated areas of need through the creation of Individualized Tutorial Plans (ITPs) which are designed to bridge the achievement gap, bringing the students’ academic performance to grade level or above. Diagnostic software, performance data analysis and regular communication with the school administration are just some of the variables used to create the ITPs. TPT works in partnership with the Ella Fitzgerald Foundation to accomplish the third goal, the promotion of literacy and reading comprehension. The fourth goal is to expose the kids to valuable enrichment and learning opportunities beyond the standard school day through educational field trips and activities that stress problem solving and teamwork. TPT’s basic structural component, the Learning Group, makes achieving these four goals possible. Each Learning Group consists of 10 students and the dedicated, experienced staff member that oversees their daily progress. This personalized attention is further enhanced through TPT’s incorporation of volunteer tutors from local university service clubs and high school community service groups. This reduces the staffing ratio, at times, to as low as 3:1. According to a study recently released by the LAUSD, students in the TPT after-school program improved more in the Math and English Language Arts components of the California Standardized Test over a two-year period ending in 2007 than students from any other middle school after-school program in the city. Moreover, TPT students average a .51 improvement on a four-point scale on their GPA after just one year in the program. These are just two of the measurables that demonstrate the effectiveness of the TPT academic component.
